Seven Georgia Perimeter STEM students are participating in 10-week summer undergraduate research studies at various universities this summer. Yetunde Maria Ogunlusi is at Emory University; Shantel Mitchell and Daniel Barnes are at Georgia State University; Yitbarek Kazentet is studying at the University of Arizona; Fo-Yao Alessou and Sarah Farhan are at Georgia Tech; and Julian Barnes is doing research at Clayton State University.

 Newton Campus SGA President Sri Rajasekaran,  has been appointed to a national task force on college affordability, one of only two Georgia student government presidents named to the task force. Rajasekaran also represented Georgia Perimeter College at the Presidential Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. May 31-June 1. She was one of approximately 150 student body presidents chosen to attend from more than 900 applicants. Rajasekaran also won a scholarship from the conference organizers to attend free of charge with travel and hospitality arranged by the National Campus Leadership Council. The leadership summit addressed national campus issues including environmental sustainability, removing the stigma associated with mental health, creating inclusive campuses, closing the skills gap and college affordability. As part of the summit, she also participated in meetings with top White House administration members about changing campus sexual assault policies and making campuses safer.

Dean’s List students for spring semester 2015 have been announced. The list recognizes students with outstanding scholastic achievement each term. Students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or better while carrying an academic load of nine semester credit hours or more of courses numbered 1000 or higher are named on the Dean’s List.

 

Joshua RobinsonGeorgia Perimeter College Dual Enrollment student Joshua Robinson has been selected to participate at GRAMMY Camp in the Music Journalism Career track based on his portfolio highlighting his online magazine, “The Roshua Review.” Robinson has published three editions of his independent music magazine, which has a hip-hop focus but also reviews music and interviews artists from many musical genres. GRAMMY Camp accepted 150 students nationwide out of 600 applicants. Robinson will travel to Los Angeles June 20-29 to attend the camp. Robinson is the son of Dr. Pamela Leggett-Robinson, associate professor of chemistry and science department chair on Decatur Campus.

 

The GPC Newton Campus Student Government Association won the college’s top student organization award at the annual Celebration of Excellence event. Students recognized were: Sri Rajasekaran, president; Andrea McClacken, vice-president; Samuel Thompson, treasurer; Daisy Alexis Duffey, secretary; Doris Baldwin, senator; Kass Forehand, senator; Emily Kringer, senator; Emilie Liebert, senator; Allison Lunsford, senator; Randy Watkins, senator; Holly Tessmer, chief programming officer; Isna Summerlin, Lyceum chair; Melissa Lattimore, Wellness chair; Michael Washington, chief court justice; David Johnson, court justice; Logan Malcolm, court justice; Beverly Douglass, alternate justice, and Giovanta Logan, Homecoming King.

 

Students involved in Georgia Perimeter College’s STEM programs and their advisors were honored in two separate ceremonies this spring. Organized by Dr. Cynthia Lester,  STEM Initiatives executive director, the programs honored scholars of excellence in the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program; the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, (PSLAMP);  the Education and Nurture Leadership in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (ENLISTEM) program, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion (STEP) program. Students also spoke about their experiences in the programs. Students attended a reception on the Clarkston Campus after both events.
