Peggy Strevel gets in some garden time. Her other summer plans include white water rafting, celebrating her mother's 80th birthday and spending time with family.

Kat Friedmann Volzer attended the USA vs. Nigeria World Cup soccer game June 16. She is holding an American Outlaws Atlanta scarf, representing a local chapter of the U.S. national team supporters group.

GPC librarian Laura Tartak poses at Scotland's Talisker Beach area; the trip was on her “bucket list” of places to visit.

Bill Roa pauses by one of the many waterfalls along the Appalachian Trail; he is completing the 2168-mile trail in segments.

Send us your ‘summer bucket list’ items

June 24 update to story:

Kat Friedmann Volzer of the Alumni Relations staff just returned from a ”bucket list” trip—to see part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup play in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

She and her husband, Jake Volzer, a GPC nursing student,  attended four soccer games in all. “But by far the best experience, and really why we went there, was to see USA,” says Kat. The highlight, she adds, was the USA vs. Nigeria game when her longtime hero, Abby Wambach, scored the winning (and only goal) of the game. “I’ve seen Wambach play several times—starting with her college career—but watching her score a World Cup goal live, in person, with over 51,000 people in the stands is a completely different experience.”

June 18 update to story:

A visit to Scotland has always been on Laura Tartak's bucket list, along with Ireland, Newfoundland, Belgium and quite a few U.S. locations, she tells us. This summer, she and her husband Ted made the trek to Scotland, a country she describes as "amazingly beautiful."

"It is a country of contrasts: rain, hail (even in June), sun and more rain, sometimes all at once; brown, barren mountains standing next to lush, green ones; winding, curvy roads and flat ones that undulate across empty stretches of land; a single house painted white against a backdrop of massive green mountains; and rainbows in the mist of sun showers."

True to the librarian that she is, Tartak says she always reads a novel set in the area she'll be visiting, so for Scotland, she read Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander.”  "Because of the novel, my husband and I took a side trip to Culloden to pay our respects when we were in the highlands," she says. Their itinerary also included Edinburgh Castle, the Isle of Skye, Inverness and Strathpeffer.

I’m not going to lie. I dislike running, and my exercise is often the walk from my car to the office. My Fitbit bracelet has recorded a dismal 5,000 steps –for the week.

So, when the Georgia Perimeter College Marketing and Communications staff proposed that we create a college-wide call-out for everyone’s “summer bucket list,” this non-runner blurted out that she would complete a 5K race by the end of this summer. (Hold your laughter, you 26.2-sticker people!)

Bill Roa, our indefatigable MarCom photographer, has already started one of his life’s bucket list items: hiking the Appalachian Trail. Over the past two years, Roa has been spending his weekends on the trail, chipping away at the 2,168.1-mile journey from Georgia to Maine.

Kysa Daniels, GPC marketing and communications writer, has targeted a longtime goal on her summer bucket list: to officially launch "Village Strong," a website she created to foster student success through connection with their parents. The site will feature insightful, research-based achievement strategies and an audio talk show hosted by Daniels and some of her “parenting” friends. She promises to have it up and running by summer’s end.

So what’s on your summer “bucket list?” We hope it’s fun. Whether it’s riding a zip line, catching the Aurora Borealis or just cleaning out that closet (hey, we have dreams, people), please send us your bucket list—and photos—to marcom@gpc.edu.  We will follow your progress and post updates during the summer.
