Georgia Perimeter professors help with Nepal relief efforts
They call themselves the “Circle of Friends”—a tight-knit group of Georgia Perimeter College and Emory University professors who travel for fun sightseeing and hiking trips every summer. This summer’s trip was to take them to Nepal.
Instead, the Circle is sending their travel deposits to the country to aid Nepalese earthquake victims.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal April 25, with the epicenter in the Kamjung District of Kathmandu near the border with China. More than eight million people in 39 districts of Nepal are affected; it is estimated that more than 7,300 people perished in the earthquake and its aftershocks, and thousands were injured.
The group was scheduled to leave for Nepal May 17.
“We had planned to go to Nepal for over a year and were so excited for this experience,” says Margee Bright Ragland, a Georgia Perimeter art instructor and one of five GPC professors who are part of the group. Bright Ragland and her husband, Wayne, were going, along with communications professor Kim Sisson, sociology professor Ernie Guyton, computer science professor Priscilla Dodds and business professor Joe Patterson.
“We are all disappointed that we won’t be going, but we are ready to help with donations to the people of Nepal,” Bright Ragland says.
If you would like to assist the people of Nepal, here is a list of some of the groups also soliciting donations for relief efforts.
