Dawn Williams: Decatur Campus librarian

Name: Dawn Wright Williams

Job: Part-time reference librarian at Decatur Campus for 16 years.

Education: Master’s degrees in African American Studies and Library and Information Science. I am taking MOOCs on various subjects and may pursue a doctoral degree.

Personal goals: Learn to tap dance, publish a book, start a vlog, retire comfortably near water, have a huge herb and vegetable garden.

Hometown: St. Louis, Mo., but I have lived in Georgia since 1991.

Family: Married to Dr. Shawn Williams, English professor at GPC Decatur. We have two beautiful teen daughters: a high school senior who is a visual artist and a high school freshman who is in training to become a professional ballerina.

Favorite book: I have too many favorite books, so I will share that my favorite author is Alice Walker.

Favorite sport: I don’t play sports, but I enjoy watching ballet. Yes, ballet is a sport, and ballerinas/ballet dancers are athletes. You try dancing by putting all your weight on your toes for two hours!

Favorite movies: “When Harry Met Sally” and “Shrek”

Most influential person in my life and why: My grandmother Rosie, a very strong woman who made many sacrifices for her family throughout her life. She always took great care of her physical, mental and spiritual self. As a result of a car accident, she suffered brain damage and early dementia and is now in a nursing home and unfortunately unaware of whom her family and friends are.

Leisure activities: Listening to music, in particular my all-time favorite artist, Prince; and watching YouTube vlogs and episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “The Barefoot Contessa.”

Pet peeves: People wearing flip flops with socks (shudder), cabinet doors left open, dishonesty.

Things most people don’t know about me: I was diagnosed with panic disorder with agoraphobia years ago. Obviously I am not homebound, but I do deal with many of the issues such as avoiding enclosed spaces and doing things alone. Also, I am obsessed with survivalist shows and communal living. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years.
