1964: A year to remember
The year 1964 was indeed a year to remember.
Nationally, the Civil Rights Act become law, and the Beatles made their American debut. Locally, on Sept. 28, 1964, more than 700 students took their place in DeKalb College classrooms, giving life to a dream that a half-century later has grown into Georgia Perimeter College.
DeKalb College was the first and only college in the state operated by a local school district (DeKalb County) until it became part of the University System of Georgia in 1986. The college now serves more than 21,000 students through its five campuses and extensive online offerings.
But the opening of the college was far from the only notable occurrence of 1964. Take a look at a few of the year’s other memorable events in our 1964 infographic.
