Jaguar basketball star alumnus Shane Henry, playing his junior season at Virginia Tech, led the Hokies in blocked shots with 28. In four games, Henry led the team in rebounds, including 13 against Virginia Military Institute, nine against University of North Carolina and eight at Syracuse University. He appeared in 29 games, averaging 10.3 minutes per game, and scored 71 points while pulling down 82 rebounds. … Head basketball coach Alfred Barney says most of this year’s freshman men’s basketball players plan to return to GPC next fall to complete their associate degrees. They will receive their athletic scholarships for their sophomore year even though intercollegiate athletics at the college will end after the spring sports seasons because of the pending consolidation with Georgia State University. Barney said the Jaguars’ all-conference star, Casey Wells, has accepted a scholarship to play at Savannah State University. … Jaguar baseball alumnus Alan Busenitz is a starting pitcher for the Arkansas Travelers, a Los Angeles Angels farm team that plays in the Double A Texas League. As of late April, Busenitz’ career minor league statistics were excellent—an earned run average of 2.43 with 97 strikeouts and only 28 walks in 122 innings pitched. … Other GPC baseball alumni playing professionally include Sam Bragg, a 2013 graduate who is pitching for the Stockton Ports in the Advance Class A California League. In his minor league career, Bragg has pitched 112 innings and struck out 113, a phenomenal achievement. Anthony Carter is on the roster of the Iowa Cubs, the Chicago Cubs Triple A team that plays in the Pacific Coast League. Carter was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and played minor league ball for them and the Boston Red Sox until last year, when he pitched in Japan.
