Georgia Perimeter College women’s basketball player Ronita Garrett nailed down an uncommon achievement during the 2012-13 season, collecting 23 double-doubles.
The accomplishment is remarkable because a double-double means a player reached a total of 10 or more in two statistical categories in a single game. The categories are scoring, rebounding, assists, steals or blocked shots.
Garrett’s double-doubles were recorded in scoring and rebounding. She averaged 20.1 points per game, leading the conference, Region 17 of the National Junior College Athletic Association. She was the league’s second top rebounder, averaging 12.4.
One of her games was not only a double-double, but a triple-double—a rare feat. Against Chattahoochee Technical College, the eventual runner-up in the conference, Garrett registered 28 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals.
“That’s the first triple-double since I’ve been here as coach,” said head coach James Waldon, who completed his 15th season at the helm of the Jaguars.
Despite a tough early schedule and challenging attrition later in the season, the Jaguars beat eventual conference champion Darton State College in December and—in the region tournament—defeated second-place Central Georgia Technical College 97-90 in overtime. Larissa Stafford scorched the nets for 41 points, and Garrett scored 26 points and had 16 rebounds.
The Jaguars, whose patented pressure defense was always present, finished the season with a 14-14 overall record, 10-10 in the conference.
Garrett was named to the All America team, the All-Region 17 first team and the all-tournament team.
