From left, Dr. Diane White, Dr. Vincent June, student Katrina Allen, Dr. Gulshan Harjee and Dr. Alan Jackson attend the ribbon-cutting of GPC’s first student health center.

The new center was the result of two years of intensive planning and was supported by the Office of Student Life, Advising and Counseling and the college’s executive team, says Dr. Diane White, GPC dean of Health Sciences. Funded by student fees, the center offers students access to non-emergency medical care, including physicals, gynecological check-ups, immunizations and point-of-care testing. Some over-the-counter medications—as well as a bandage—are free.

GPC students on the Decatur, Dunwoody and Newton campuses are provided services via a mobile health-care van that makes scheduled visits to each campus.

The health center is overseen by Dr. Gulshan Harjee, a DeKalb County physician, and staffed by a nurse practitioner, registered nurse, medical technician and secretary. “We know the impact student health has on student retention,” says Dr. Vincent June, GPC vice president for student services.
