Travis Crawford: Dual Enrollment student
Name: Travis Crawford
GPC experience: I have attended two semesters—fall 2013 and spring 2014—as a Dual Enrollment student at Georgia Perimeter, taking 14 credit hours each semester. I will continue this fall as a DE “Move on When Ready” student. The DE program allows me to earn college credits while I am still in high school.
So you’re a fan of Dual Enrollment? Yes. After participating in DE for a semester, I began telling my friends what a great experience it was. Many friends asked if I was coming back to Parkview next year, and I told them that I enjoyed the freedom and people at GPC far too much to ever willingly return to high school. Many friends were interested, so I told them the details of how DE works. Some were intimidated by the heavier workload, but others recognized the possibilities and joined. Two of my friends will be DE students at Georgia Perimeter next semester, and I know of a few others who are participating in the program at other schools.
Future plans: I plan to graduate from GPC with my associate degree in biology before applying to Emory University for my bachelor’s. I hope to earn a medical degree from Emory and maybe open my own medical practice one day.
Best thing about GPC: The diversity of the classes with people of all ages and walks of life.
Favorite place: Stone Mountain Park because there are lots of activities to do and places to explore and admire nature.
Family: I live with my brother and mom in Lilburn; all of my direct family lives within 10 miles.
Favorite book: “A Storm of Swords” by George R.R. Martin
Leisure activities: Reading, hiking, cooking and playing soccer and ultimate Frisbee. I also work part-time on the kitchen staff at a locally-owned restaurant.
Most influential person in my life and why: My mom because she raised my brother and me on her own while opening and maintaining her own business.
