Ivan DixonIvan Dixon, a nurse in the coronary care unit of Emory University Hospital and a graduate of GPC’s Nursing school, has won the national DAISY Award for nurses. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of an auto-immune disease. According to the website, the award honors “the super-human work nurses do in direct care of patients and families every day.”

 

GPC Jaguar Activity Group members attended the National Association for Campus Activities regional conference in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Oct. 9-12. They participated in educational workshops and networked with speakers, artists and others who could potentially come to GPC in the future to entertain and educate the student body. The student leaders included Jabril Titus and Melissa Lattimore, both Newton; and Victor Reaves, John Gresham and Sofia Espina, all Dunwoody.

 

John AsangaClarkston Campus student John Asanga has passed the American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer exam. ACE is an internationally recognized organization for certifying fitness professionals. Now that Asanga is an ACE Personal Trainer, he hopes to train small groups or individuals as he continues his education.

 

Georgia Perimeter Student Government Association members Akim Mitoumba-Mickala and Mohamed Compaore, both Dunwoody, and Emilie Liebert and Sri Rajasekaran, both Newton, attended the national American Student Government Association conference in Washington, D.C. Oct. 2-5. ASGA is the professional association that serves and supports college and university student governments.

 

GPC Newton SGA President Sri Rajasekaran attended a White House meeting with other SGA presidents from Georgia Oct. 3 in Washington, D.C. The group met with Kyle Lierman, associate director for the Office of Public Engagement at the White House. Lierman coordinates outreach on education issues and leads the “It’s On Us” sexual assault prevention campaign for the White House. The meeting was organized by Andrew McCracken (far right), executive director for the National Campus Leadership Council.
