Allison Lunsford at conferenceNewton Campus SGA Senator Allison Lunsford participated in the National Student Leadership Diversity Conference in Atlanta on April 11. The conference is the largest national gathering of student leaders to address the critical topics of diversity and social justice challenging campuses today.

The GPC Dunwoody Campus math team performed well at the University of North Georgia regional math tournament. In the individual competition, Tongtong “Connie” Zhao finished second and Yunho Choi placed fifth. The team of Thien Lam, Vinh Pham and Elijah Williams placed second overall.

Katherine Wilson, an alumna of GPC’s engineering program, has been named the spring 2015 University of Minnesota ECE Department Boeing Scholarship recipient. She is now in her second semester in the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Electrical Engineering program.

Wilson recently wrote to GPC engineering Professor Dr. Anant Honkan to thank him and to report on her progress in her goal of becoming an engineer. Her letter is quoted in part below:

“Thank you for preparing me so well to be an engineering student. Although I do not use statics on a daily basis, your encouragement of reading, working on the problem set alone, working on the problem set with others, and then asking any remaining questions has been wonderful. I find myself writing down ‘known’ and ‘to find’ items when I am given a difficult exam or problem set question, which has helped me to see the necessary connections to answer them on numerous occasions. Engineering is the hardest field of study I have ever pursued, but Statics and your advice have helped me to keep working towards my goals. The GPC Engineering Program is truly special.

I am honored to be a Spring 2015 University of Minnesota ECE Department Boeing Scholarship recipient. My interest in space systems helped me to earn this scholarship. Thank you for mentoring so many students over your career; I am sure that Kavya Manyapu’s work is in part responsible for The Boeing Company's interest in female engineers seeking opportunities in human spaceflight.

Our can satellite competition team earned 4th place out of 56 teams on our Preliminary Design Review. I am the Electronics Team lead, and our group is particularly proud that we could integrate mechanical, electrical, and aerospace perspectives in our design. I will keep you updated on how we do; we are waiting on our critical design review results that will determine if we qualify for the June launch.”

Five Georgia Perimeter College students have been named to the All-Georgia Academic Team for Phi Theta Kappa. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and the community.

The students received the award medallions and were recognized by educators and legislators during a special ceremony and luncheon held March 12 in downtown Atlanta.

Honored were Clarkston Campus students Aemah Badri and Deepa Singh Thakuri, Dunwoody Campus students Pavaresh Rozhin and Armel Nsiangani and Newton Campus student Jeremy Borger. Badri also received the New Century Scholar Award for Georgia.

Georgia Perimeter College alumna Kadiata Sy is one of four Emory University students who will spend a year studying in Scotland at the University of St. Andrews as recipients of the 2015-16 Robert T. Jones Jr. Scholarship.

Sy is a 2012 Honors Program graduate of GPC where she served as Student Government Association president at Clarkston Campus, founded the campus Philosophy Club and won the campus President’s Award. She is a recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which is funding her studies at Emory, as well as possible future graduate studies. Read her GPC story.

At Emory, Sy is a double major in political science and Middle Eastern and South Asian studies and will pursue a degree in Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asian security studies at St. Andrews. She is the founding president of the Emory Association of Middle Eastern Studies and co-founder of the Women’s Branch of the African Liberation Forces of Mauritania.

Five Georgia Perimeter Decatur Campus students represented GPC at the National Model African Union Conference in Washington D.C. Feb. 19-22. They are Alex Myers, Shanteran Stinson, Marcus Tucker, Jaron Gills and Ugochukwu Ossai. The students represented the country of Tunisia in North Africa. They were assigned to separate committees and tasked with drafting and negotiating resolutions pertaining to various issues in Africa. Also, Myers was presented with one of three Committee Leadership Awards in recognition of his work and leadership role. GPC participation in Model African Union was coordinated by the Decatur Campus Civic and Political Awareness Club.

Emmanuel “Slate” Lyons was interviewed March 3 by WSB’s Myrna Brown about his role in the Teens Against Dating Violence summit to be held in Duluth March 14. Lyons is a student in the DeKalb Early College Academy program, which is a partnership between GPC and the DeKalb County school system. Also, Lyons was a performing artist and co-host of the Teen Dating Violence Awareness event held at the DECA site March 6. Other DECA students performed at the open mic event as well.
