Kathleen DeMarco, English, Newton, had a column, “March to the Sea: Silent Witness to Sherman,” appear in the Covington News on Sept. 6. The article discussed local cemeteries and quoted her fellow faculty member, Dr. George Lonberger, social sciences, and featured the research of GPC librarian Gregory Cates.

Adam Stone, political science, Alpharetta, was interviewed by national Fox News about Sunday voting and the Georgia Secretary of State’s allegations about potential voting fraud. He also talked about how close the races for governor and senator will be in Georgia.

GPC faculty and staff members with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service to the college received service pins at the college’s Fall Convocation. A total of 119 got pins for 5 years, 39 for 10 years, 15 for 15 years and 15 for 20 years. Nine were honored for 25 years of service: Patricia Allen, Beryle Boyd, Debra Denzer, Scott Hardy, Carol Ann Harris, Elijah Hill, Sarah “Sallie” Paschal, Timothy Roseberry and Sharon Topping. Three were honored for their 30 years at the college: Douglas Casey, Beverly Cook and Martin Okafor.

Fine Arts faculty member Sally Robertson has been tapped by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby to serve on a new Campus Safety and Security Committee that will review and develop recommendations on matters related to public safety at the system’s 31 public colleges and universities. The committee will conduct a comprehensive review of policies and procedures at USG institutions and deliver a report with recommendations to the chancellor not later than the Board of Regents’ May 2015 meeting. Robertson also serves as the University System of Georgia Faculty Council chair. “The safety and well being of our students, our faculty and staff on our campuses is both a concern and a priority,” said Huckaby. “Looking ahead in the University System, as we work to be more student-focused in the academic performance of students, I have concluded that we must simultaneously sharpen our focus on campus safety and behavior.”
