A nightmarish six-run sixth inning erased a 1-0 lead and the Georgia Perimeter College Jaguars softball team lost to Navarro College 8-1 in an elimination game Thursday at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in St. George, Utah.

The meltdown not only ended the Jaguars’ season but served as lights out on the college's intercollegiate athletic program that began as the DeKalb College Patriots in the 1966-67 academic year. Because GPC is merging with Georgia State University, this was the finale for sports at the college.

Earlier in the week, Georgia Perimeter dropped its first NJCAA tournament game 4-1 to 5th seeded Blinn College of Texas. The Jaguars were seeded 12th in the 16-team double-elimination tournament; Navarro was the 13th seed.

In the Navarro game, freshman GPC second baseman K.K. Parrish belted a solo home run in the fourth inning, and pitcher La’Brisha Washington sailed through the first 5 1/3 innings, shutting down the Bulldogs’ order with little trouble. But in the top of the sixth, Navarro’s Miranda Worthington hit a two-run homer; Catherine Alvarado made it back-to-back homers, and Navarro was off and running.

The softball Jaguars finished the program’s final campaign with a record of 25-21.
