The 2012 Georgia Perimeter College women’s soccer team defended the Jaguars’ regular-season undefeated streak, extending the run to three years and adding a perfect season with no ties.

Carrying a 15-0 record into the conference championship tournament, the Jaguars won their semifinal match in overtime before Darton State College—a team GPC had beaten twice—defeated them to capture the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association championship.

“How many teams would love to have a 16-1 season? We’re proud of our accomplishments,” said head coach Bruno Kalonji, who received the GCAA Coach of the Year award.

The Jaguars produced numerous achievements in 2012—in addition to an outstanding record. For starters, freshman defender Alexandria Truitt was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-America first team.

“Alex anchored the back line, was team co-captain and was a leader on and off the field,” Kalonji said. “She is one of the best defenders I’ve ever worked with.”

By extending their remarkable streak, the Jaguars have not lost a regular-season game in three consecutive years—the last defeat was to Young Harris College in October 2009. The 2010 and 2011 teams had ties in their regular seasons, but no losses.

It is a feat no other Georgia Perimeter College sport, and few other college programs, has accomplished.

Applying expert ball control and a stingy defense led by Truitt, GPC was 14-0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (Region 17 of the NJCAA) and finished the regular season with all wins (15-0), a first for the program.

The Jaguars dominated the All-Region 17 team with eight honorees. Joining Truitt on the first team were freshman Caroline Haaland and sophomore Vanessa Alexander; the same trio also made the all-region tournament team.

Haaland, a defending midfielder, combined with Truitt’s back line to register nine shutouts. Alexander and teammate Rachael Schmidt were tied as the league’s third top scorers, with 33 points.

Freshman forward Kacey McInerney, second in the league with 21 goals and two assists for 44 points, was named to the all-region second team, along sophomore defender—and co-captain—Stefani Iotova, freshman defender Iris Gonzalez and freshman midfielder Stephanie Gutierrez.

Schmidt and freshman goalkeeper Rose Okechukwu received all-region honorable mention awards.
