From left, Menford Owusu, Davis Dawson and Ismail Lemtouni won national championships and spots on the NJCAA All-America Team.

After the 2011 squad finished seventh in the nation, last spring’s team posted a 7-3 regular-season record and then dominated the top flights in the NJCAA Division 1 national tournament at Plano, Texas, finishing in a tie for third place.

GPC’s Menford Owusu and Ismail Lemtouni won national championships in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights, and Lemtouni and Davis Dawson won the top flight doubles championship. With the titles, each player earned a berth on the NJCAA All-America team.

Each of the six GPC players in the tournament won his first round, and most captured more wins to pile up points for the team.

“They played as a team and would have not made it as far as they did without each other’s support,” said Nait Omar. “They all performed at the top of their game.”

It marks Lemtouni’s second year as an All-America selection and his second No. 1 doubles championship. The International Tennis Association named Lemtouni the NJCAA Region 17 player of the year and Nait Omar the region coach of the year.

This summer the ITA named Owusu to the Collegiate All-Star Team, an honor awarded at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
